THE I PROBLEM

THE I PROBLEM

Romans 7:18-19: For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh) dwelleth no good thing; for to will is present with me, but how to perform that which is good I find not. For the good that I would, I do not; but the evil which I would not, that I do.

Meditation: Romans Chapter 7 reveals to us an issue that not only Paul dealt with but we as well. It was well known that Paul had an eye problem, but in this passage we see that he also had an “I” problem. The frequent use of the first personal pronoun shows that self-effort to win the victory over indwelling sin is indeed an effort of futility. I,I, I, me, me, me is too often the Christian’s mantra, but it’s only through the indwelling Holy Spirit that we can have the victory over sin.

Prayer: Dear Lord, sometimes we just get so filled with self that there’s no longer room for You! Please fill us with Your Spirit to such a degree that people no longer see us but Jesus in us! Amen.
